Services Available

At Southwestern, we offer quality mental health services designed to treat individuals with a variety of issues. Our diverse team of psychiatrists, nurses, psychologists, therapists, case managers, and mental health technicians brings a wealth of education and experience to the treatment settings described below:

Outpatient Services

Most emotional and mental health problems are treated in an outpatient office setting. Outpatient Services are available to any adult, child, or family for crisis intervention, problem assessment, and ongoing treatment. Services are provided in an atmosphere of empathy and support at our six outpatient locations in Gibson, Posey, Vanderburgh, and Warrick Counties.

Emergency Services

We offer 24-hour emergency evaluations, crisis interventions, and counseling for people of all ages with mental health and/or substance abuse problems. During normal office hours, Emergency Services are available at any of our six outpatient offices in Gibson, Posey, Vanderburgh, and Warrick Counties. After normal office hours and on weekends, services are available by phone (812) 423-7791.

Inpatient Services

When a patient is experiencing mental illness symptoms that require 24-hour per day supervision, the patient may be hospitalized at Deaconess Hospital or Deaconess Cross Pointe, both in Evansville, Indiana. Treatment may include medication, individual therapy, family counseling, group therapy, recreational therapy, intensive outpatient treatment, and post-hospitalization treatment planning. Although patients are treated at Deaconess, Southwestern physicians and staff are part of the treatment team.

Youth Day Treatment Program

The Youth Day Treatment Program is a psychiatric partial hospitalization program for children ages five through twelve who are diagnosed as having a serious emotional disorder. During the normal school day, children receive both classroom instruction and treatment, including individual, group, and activity therapy, for their behavior problems. Located on Evansville's west side, the Youth Day Treatment Program is provided in cooperation with the Evansville-Vanderburgh School Corporation and serves as the child's school placement for part or all of the school year. It is available to children from other counties based on an agreement with the local school corporation and Southwestern.

Youth Outreach Program

Through the Youth Outreach Program, children who are at risk of placement in residential care or in a state-operated facility receive wraparound services and intensive community-based interventions so that such placements can either be eliminated or reduced in duration.

Community Support Services

This group of services is geared toward patients with serious mental illness who need assistance in many areas of their lives such as acquiring housing, employment, Social Security benefits, and medical care for their illness.

Day Treatment Program - Structured therapy and activity programs are offered for individuals with serious mental illness. This includes group and individual counseling, activities of daily living training, expressive and activity therapies, and prevocational programming.

Supervised Group Living Program - Supervised Group Living is provided for residents as an alternative to institutional placement. The emphasis of this program is on improving interpersonal skills and skills of daily living as well as maximizing community involvement. Southwestern currently operates four group homes in Evansville. Ten patients reside in each home, and the homes are staffed around the clock.

Alternative Family Living - Individuals from the community are recruited and trained to care for persons with psychiatric disabilities in the individual's homes. Case management services are provided on a weekly basis to support the alternative family, to monitor the patient's medication, and to assure that treatment needs are met.

Outpatient / Case Management Program - Case management services are provided to assist individuals with major mental illness to live independently in the community through assistance with activities of daily living and other supportive services.

Supported Employment - Individuals with mental illness are linked to appropriate employment opportunities. The program is offered to provide employment support services for patients of Southwestern who are determined eligible by the Indiana Division of Vocation Rehabilitation to receive employment placement and support services. Prevocational counseling, vocational assessment, assistance with job search and placement, and job coaching is provided.

This program consists of group therapy and education sessions three evenings per week, three hours per night for six to eight weeks. Aftercare consists of 8-10 weekly group sessions focusing on relapse prevention strategies.

Day Treatment Program - A structured day treatment program is provided for individuals who have serious chemical dependency problems but who have the support of a safe, drug-free environment and who can remain abstinent between program days. Individual and group counseling, vocational counseling, and skill development are provided while in the residential setting.

Court Screening Services - We consult with courts to evaluate the mental status of individuals under the jurisdiction of the court for whom mental health services may be an alternative to or part of other court action.

Older Adult Services - Many elderly people living in nursing homes have mental illnesses. We work with community organizations and care providers who serve the elderly to understand the mental health needs of the elderly.
